About University of Tennessee Knoxville

The University of Tennessee Knoxville, also known as UT, UT Knoxville, or UTK, is a public land-grant university headquartered at Knoxville, which is the county seat of Knox County, the third-largest city in the U.S. state of Tennessee, the largest city in East Tennessee, and the principal city of the Knoxville Metropolitan Statistical Area, the city having a population estimated at a number of more than 173 000 inhabitants, during the 2000 census.

UT Knoxville was founded in 1794, 2 years before Tennessee became a state, being chartered as Blount College, an all-male, non-sectarian institution, which became East Tennessee College, in 1807. The school was temporarily closed until 1820, after the president and only faculty member died in 1809, but it was re-opened and elevated to university status in 1840, when it became East Tennessee University.

In 1869, the institution adopted its current name, after federal funds and land had been allocated to the University for the purposes of instructing students in military, agricultural, and mechanical subjects, the Trustees, soon after, approving the establishment of a medical program under the auspices of the Nashville School of Medicine.

Today, UTK is the flagship institution of the statewide University of Tennessee system, having nine undergraduate departments and eleven graduate departments, hosting nearly 28 000 students from all 50 states and more than 100 foreign countries, facts which earned the university high rankings from various significant publications, such as U.S. News & World Report, which, in 2010, ranked it among the best national universities and public institutions of higher learning, UT also being ranked 52nd among public universities of America and 118th among all United States universities.

Athletics

UTK's Thletic teams are known as the Tennessee Volunteers, who compete in the Southeastern Conference's Eastern Division, in various sports, for both men and women, including in football, in which they won the 1938, 1940, 1950, 1951 and 1998 National Championships, in 2010, the men's team advancing to the Elite Eight, or quarterfinal round, in the NCAA Division I Men's Basketball Tournament for the first time. The women's basketball team, known as the Tennessee Lady Volunteers, also contributed to the university's athletic fame, having won 8 NCAA Division I titles, between 87 and 2008.
